Objective
After years of iterative web design, 1-800 Contacts found themselves with an app that had fallen behind. Jumping in with a fresh PM, he and I were able to establish a common infrastructure between both web and app. This not only bridged gaps in the customer journey, but also created better communication across orgs.
I think the success of a project hinges on its process. In order to set a strong foundation I knew I needed to start with context gathering and requirement defining.
So I pushed to set that stage by running a week long sprint as a team (PM, Dev, Design, QA). I knew this would help us really dial in what we needed this app to accomplish.
I ran our team through various brainstorming exercises to fully flesh out our vision before I started to synthesize it all.
After the first few days of context gathering, inspiration hunting, and mind melding we started to have a solid idea of our future. All we needed to do was change everything.
We restructured our navigation to a bottom tab bar, created new sections to mirror web, and unified everything with a cohesive design language.
Starting with a sprint gave us a clear direction for the vision of our app, but we knew we couldn’t change everything all at once.
We began breaking our goals into smaller changes to rebuild our app piece by piece. During this process we collaborated with other teams all across the organization in order to deliver a cohesive experience to all.
To this day the app team continues to refine itself and the app will continue to delight customers without me but I feel glad to have been able to help setup a strong foundation and create a sense of unity within the app’s experience.
